Udani is the Principal Lawyer and Founder of Perera Legal Group (“PLG”). Udani is licenced to practice law in Alberta and Ontario. Udani holds a Juris Doctor Degree from the Faculty of Law of Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, and an Honors Bachelor of Arts Degree in Law and Society from York University in Toronto, Ontario. Udani practices in the areas of litigation with a focus immigration and family law matters. During law school, Udani was heavily involved in community organizations that are dedicated to providing pro-bono legal services to those who cannot afford lawyers. Her work as a law student at the Community Legal Aid, Pro bono Students Canada and the Northumberland Community Legal Centre helped many individuals, businesses and families pursue their legal rights and demand for justice. Udani worked on files involving workers’ rights, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board appeals, housing law, Ontario Disability Support Program appeals, human rights complaints, and attended Small Claims Courts. Udani was also selected to work with Phillip Morris International Group as a second-year summer law student. In this position, Udani handled diverse range of legal needs in the areas of: business law, employment law, human rights, advertising and consumer goods packaging law. She played a central part in implementing an in-house Global Agricultural Practice Program that promoted safe and fair working conditions for tobacco farmers across the world. Upon graduation, Udani articled for a boutique law firm located in downtown Toronto, Ontario where she carried complex litigation files and assisted individuals, families, and mega corporations with their immigration matters. Udani was called to the bar in June 2019 and was invited to join the firm as an Associate. Udani has worked with individuals, non-for-profit and government organizations, financial institutions, mid-size and small businesses across the world. She has successfully advocated for her clients in contractual disputes, shareholder and commercial disputes, contract negotiations, wrongful dismissal, constructive dismissal, human rights claims, and residential tenancies disputes. In addition, Udani has assisted clients in marriage breakdown, debt enforcement, copyrights claims, judicial review and appeals against deportation, as well as various immigration matters, including temporary and permanent residence. Udani is dedicated to advocating for her clients, from the initial consultation stage through to negotiations, and if needed, trial. She has successfully appeared and argued before the Federal Court of Canada, Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, Provincial Court of Alberta, Superior Court of Justice in Ontario, Ontario Court of Justice, the Ministry of Labor, Landlord and Tenant Board, Residential Tenancies Dispute Resolution Service, Social Security Tribunal, Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, and many other regulatory bodies in Ontario and Alberta. Udani is passionate about enhancing access to justice and regularly hosts informational seminars on various legal subjects. In addition, she is a volunteer lawyer for Calgary Legal Guidance’s evening clinic, which caters to vulnerable individuals with legal problems. She is also a Roster Lawyer for Legal Aid Alberta and is dedicated to give back to her community. She is a founding member of the Canadian Immigration Lawyer’s Association, a group that advocates for all issues related to immigration before the Minister. Udani is an execute member of the Voice of the Profession, Canadian Bar Association branch in Alberta. Prior to her legal career, Udani’s professional experience includes multinational retail management, business development and community involvement in various organizations that serve needs and interests of disadvantaged local communities. She is passionate about advocating for animal rights and often participates in a good cause such as co-founding the Pawsitive Lives, a stray dog sanctuary based in Sri Lanka.
