Super Visa (Parents & Grandparents) – new changes

The Super Visa Program started in 2011 and allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents to visit their families in Canada for extended periods of time. The minimum requirements of the program includes the sponsor meeting minimum income requirements, applicant(s) passing a medical exam, and providing proof of health care coverage from a Canadian insurance provider for at least 1 year during their stay in Canada.

Exciting news! On June 7th, 2022, the Honorable Minister announced a few changes to the program that would take effect on July 4, 2022.

• The length of stay per visit would increase from 2 years to 5 years for parents/grandparents;
• If you already hold a super visa, you also have the option to extend your stay up to 2 years at a time.
• Minister can designate international medical insurance companies to provide coverage to super visa applicants in the future.
• Currently, only Canadian insurance providers can provide the necessary medical coverage that super visa applicants are required to have.
